Project launch | Articulate Org Review

APS

Upstairs  | Opens on Mar 25 until Apr 9 | Fri, Sat & Sun

The project launch for Articulate's Organisation Review is a ongoing process work over 3 weeks that will visualise the data from the open survey, a collection point for stories about Articulate, and importantly be the platform for community consultations.
This project focusses on the organisation review of the not-for-profit (NFP) artist-run-initiative (ARI), Articulate project space, of Inner West Sydney, at 497 Parramatta Road Leichhardt NSW, in its twelfth year since founding. And in the process, it will documentation the projects, exhibitions and events that it had hosted, and to make future plans for a publicly accessible archive resource.

It aims to collect and collate data, to review the organisations processes in area of business administration, in area of Art practice, as well as in area of people resource. The analysed findings will be presented to APS’s board, collective and its wider community, which will help inform future strategies in order continually do better.

It also addresses the lack of scholarly research documenting the running-of and predicament of ARIs in Australia, which are art entities naturally presumed to be transient in nature, and thus are either deemed unnecessary or have already ceased operations before it can be recorded.

According to Amy Griffiths in her 2012 thesis on ‘From Then to Now: Artist Run Initiatives in Sydney, New South Wales’, even internationally, literature on ARIs and its practices tends to focus on separate spaces without contextualising them as a whole, resulting in fragmented knowledge that impedes chronicling in Australia’s art history [1].

This project proposes to devise a systematic method for looking into ARIs, that others can reference for their own organisation reviews. Steadfast reviews and published reports on ARIs across the arts sector will help establish a central reserve of knowledge to “aid in the furthering of this culture and the creation of a ARI sector.” [2]

The significance of this project will negotiate the gap between organisation review for business and for arts entity; it also acknowledges the gap in understanding to how ARIs and national institution differ in their contribution to the arts ecology.

The project will produce:
A formal, published report for the findings from the organisation review
At least 2 art-based reporting exhibitions, that feature audience participation
A collection of arts-based research methods and its data analysis criterion, that is suitable for organisation review
A suggested template or guideline for ARIs to conduct their own review
