 ‘Shopping in Klungkung’, 2023

.

1m x 2m various fabrics including batik, striped sari, marimekko belt, kaftan

Kaftans came in around 1970. This one was made in Indonesia for my friend Sarah Mannix. They went out when my mother’s friend announced “Ethnic’s out, darling. Throw away your Kaftans.” Around 1974 Sarah and I went to an antique shop in Klungkung. I returned there recently and found an old dance costume which forms the large yellow bag.

Artist profile

I have been working with clothes which I or friends used to wear, exploring the colour, patterns and shapes to create large collages. This piece belongs to a series called ‘girls in gardens’ reflecting the late 60’s & early70’s hippy era, flower power and all things ethnic.
