Natural dyes, panties, bra lace, fabric offcuts, ribbons and sewing thread on reclaimed folded shirts, dimensions variable, 2022-2023
This work is preoccupied with consumerist alienation from the invisible labours behind garments and with restoration of the devalued textiles. The process involves folding of well-worn shirts, natural dyeing, hand sewing of fabric scraps and stitching. The repetitive cross-stitches seek to highlight the layers of labour in the garments and encode the memories associated with the bodies that wore them.
Monika Cvitanovic is a Croatian born, Sydney/Gadigal-based artist who fosters a slow and circular practice involving hand stitching as a form of resistance to patriarchal and capitalist expectations. Monika practices a slow approach to materiality, memory and layers of histories embedded in quotidian objects. Her current project reclaims textiles as a site of care for her familial and cultural histories of textile-based knowledge and aims for sustainability in relationship to the future.
