 Remaining Supportive

.

Fragments of broken chair, ink and acrylic stained canvas and yoga matting, 2024

The functional purpose of a chair is usually one of support. For the artwork, ‘Remaining Supportive’, I have repurposed fragments of a broken chair found discarded in a Sydney laneway to include them in a wall sculpture with other materials. By using the chair’s fragments to support remnants of ink and acrylic stained canvas and yoga matting, the assemblage aims to embody the notion of both the physical and emotional support we all need at various times.

Artist profile

Transformation is an important component in my practice, through both materials and methodology. My work employs a hybrid of controlled and spontaneous elements; spatial arrangements and compositions; and contrasting materials. Layering of material and metaphor play a key role in my assemblages which are used to depict the emotions and shared encounters experienced within the urban space and to allude to wider environmental concerns. My practice is situated in the field of extended painting in which I borrow approaches from painting, sculpture and conceptual fashion.
