 Sponge foam, 2024

The chair and the stool are conceived as a two-dimensional object. Cut from one big sponge foam block. They are realised through orthographic projection - In plan, section and elevation. The sponge foam block is cut seamlessly and precisely by a numerically controlled robotic cutter. The design eliminates any complex structure. It reduces the shape to its simplest ergonomic form. It uses a very basic slotting mechanism that turns a two-dimensional object into a three-dimensional object.

The sponge foam itself is the hero material. The contradiction of shape, and form to the look and feel. The visually hard and rigid geometric shape versus the soft to touch sponge foam. Designed to be realised as a flat-pack. It’s an exploration of a series of slotting forms as chairs and stools.
