Daniel Press

 Striker's Library, 2022

.

Oil paint mixed with sheep's wool – felted on a blanket, 52.5cm wide, 32 high (unframed)

Referencing an archival photograph of the strikers' library at Barcaldine during the 1891 Shearers' Strike, the work resurfaces the reality often omitted in mythologised images of shearing.

Artist profile

Daniel Press is a multidisciplinary artist, curator, and PhD Candidate at UNSW Art & Design. While primarily a sculptor, his hybrid textile and under-drawing/painting practice uncovers how Australian sheep shearing mythology is conceived and maintained over time. Press is a board member and co-founder of the Newtown-based ARI, DRAW Space. He is also the co-founder of the cross-institutional HDR studio crit program between National Art School, Sydney College of the Arts, and UNSW Art & Design. In 2022, he was awarded the PGC Research Candidate Award for the Faculty of Arts, Design and Architecture.
