Sue Callanan
Unearthed (2025)
.
Earth, rusted spanner. 700 x 500 mm.
The idea is that a rusting spanner sitting on a pile of earth in a picture format is a displaced context from its original. I actually unearthed the spanner from my garden. I thought it fitting to follow on from a previous work Dust to Dust made for EARTH 2024. I anticipate that in this displaced context of an art gallery the work will be viewed differently, with a critical Eye.. It is a commentary on the material quality of things, notably those items of every day use that have the capacity to dissolve back into the earth without scarring , in contrast to the proliferation of plastic and non-recyclable items that surround us.
Sue Callanan has a long practice of creating sculptural installations, invariably incorporating the surrounding architecture. In recent years some works have developed according to regular patterns of shows occurring at Articulate e.g. PROCESS(ED), and EARTH, such that they become sequels, evolving over time. The one work takes place in the same or closely aligned spot as the one the year before.
