 The Last Battle

.

 Oil on Canvas, Repurposed Velvet, 120 x 90cm, 2023

This is a parody of a painting completed by French painter Franz Rouband, who documented many happenings of the Russo-Circassian War. I recreated this painting in the hopes of connecting to my ancestral history.

The theme of Earth applies to the physical migration and diaspora that came as a result of the events of the war, which separated the Circassian people from their homeland. There is also an environment-conscious repurposing of velvet fabric. I sewed this fabric into the painting to add a more tangible element to the process of remembering and mourning.
Dana Hubraq is an emerging artist and writer practicing on Gadigal land, holding a degree in Fine Arts/Arts from the University of New South Wales. She primarily works with oils, creating collages of Circassian iconography and traditional battle paintings in an attempt at making sense of her diasporic heritage. Her work aims to connect with viewers on the basis of grief and nostalgia, blurring the boundary between the personal and the universal experience.
