Earth’s Tidal Traces
.
Oil painting on scavenged materials, various dimensions
Earth’s Tidal Traces explores intertidal zones, where ocean meets land between low tide and high, by expressing how we as artists traverse these rhythmic edges. The Earth swells at high tide, becoming elongated on the equator and shortened in the poles. This effect can be detected by scientific instruments, but we can feel the same pull by visiting the beach. Tracing these daily movements helps us understand connection to delicate yet diverse littoral ecosystems. Artists Anita Lever and Genevieve Jobes combine their environmental concerns of coastal ecology into a body of work expressed via painting and digital projection on repurposed surfaces. Both artists will share visual stories of embodied experiences communicating what it means to tread lightly on vulnerable yet evolving foreshores. The submission considers conceptual research and materiality found via somatic journeys through the overlap of earth and tide.

Anita Lever and Genevieve Jobes collaborate in Sydney’s coastlands, discovering the crucial nature of intertidal zones. These challenging habitats are both concealed and revealed according to tidal movements, spanning high and low watermarks. The artists research through walking, ocean swimming, art making and writing to explore the intricate ecosystems existing at the intersection of land and sea. Survival of diverse rock-pool species from human intervention requires adaption and resilience, vital qualities as we face enormous environmental challenges. Their work is structured on a call and response rhythm, which involves sharing of their artistic practice, poetic correspondence and site -specific installations.
