Wisconsin quilt paintings, Log Cabin and Dave's Star

.

 Oil on canvas, 60 x 60 cm x 2, 2020

These two paintings were completed while I was undertaking a self-directed residency in Wausau, Wisconsin. As part of a series of six, the works were produced during a long and cold winter while I living in a cabin in the forest. While living in Wisconsin my research examined the history of quilt making in Wisconsin and Minnesota and its relationship to abstraction.

Artist profile

For the past thirty years my practice has continued to investigate the relationship between textiles, abstraction and text. In the mid 1990s I completed a series of large scale monochromatic chenille bedspread paintings, an example from this series belongs to the collection of the Art Gallery of NSW. Many of these works use upcycled materials such as d'oyleys, felt and clothing to produce reductive paintings. The theoretical objective of my practice is to articulate aesthetic and cultural binaries relating to fine art and craft, abstraction and representation as well as issues relating to the construction of gender via the concepts of femininity and masculinity.
