 Safety Blanket

.

 paper, thread, 140cm x 200cm, 2020

Safety Blanket embodies the intricate process of mending, both literally and symbolically, through the meticulous use of paper and thread. The paper materials, sourced from daily life including old art brochures, catalogues, and business records, serve as emblems of personal experiences, encompassing struggles and cherished memories alike. The act of tearing the paper signifies the feeling of being torn apart, broken down, and ultimately pulped. Through the repetitive stitching of the numeral 8, accompanied by embossed four-leaf clover symbols for luck, Safety Blanket signifies resilience and hope. Each stitch, resembling the figure 8 motion, symbolises individual suffering within oppressive forces, yet also represents the collective courage needed to bind the community and embark on a journey towards healing.
