 Tangles (cubed), 2022 Mixed Media H 9cm x W 65cm x D 15cm

Tangles are common when hand knitting, occurring in response to the action of knitting, and when then yarn interacts with its surroundings. Exploring ways to make visible these ‘mistakes’ is an integral part of my art practice. The work Tangles (cubed) explores this knitting experience through adapting a methodology used in a research paper entitled ‘Spontaneous knotting of an agitated string’. Varying lengths of thread were measured and left in the artist’s everyday bag 5 times, each length for roughly 4 weeks. The resulting tangles document material interactions with the bag’s contents during daily artist ambulation’s and handbag tussles.
 ‘Spontaneous knotting of an agitated string’ is summarised at https://agent-monkey.com/en/blogs/posts/research-what-to-do-when-headphone-cables-tangle

Artist profile

I work with the rule-based conventions found in traditional textile hand-making. Using a multidisciplinary approach, I search for ways to disrupt the ordered complexity intrinsic to these techniques, by embracing imperfection and mistake-making, unmaking and remaking processes, with the aim of making visible knots, tangles and dropped stitches and struggles that these elicit.
