 working drawing

.

 Mixed media on paper
Each 29.7cm x 21cm (40cm x 30cm framed)
Various years (2021 - 2024)

These working drawings have become an important part of my drawing process. They are not a plan for what I intend to do, or a record of what's been done exactly - they develop in a reciprocal way alongside their larger counterparts, doing the work of testing and documenting concepts, compositions and language.

I believe these are a remnant of being trained as an architect, where the working drawing develops, notates, and archives. In the end it is a record of the journey.

I intend to show three working drawings that relate to recent works - including ‘Ceremony’ which was exhibited at Landslide Gallery in August 2024. Another piece ‘Poems for Independence’ will be shown at Braemer Gallery in late 2025 in an exhibition of the same name. The working drawings will be temporarily framed and intended for conventional hanging/display.

Artist profile

I am an artist from Whakatāne, Aotearoa New Zealand, now living and working on Gundungurra and Darug Country, also known as the Blue Mountains, NSW.

Influenced by an education in architecture and a deep interest in drawing, for the past decade my practice has explored representations of landscape, spirituality, iconography and poetry. My drawing practice uses colour, mark-making, erasure and veiled layering of soft pastel and charcoal on paper.
