A Ceremonial Processing of Information: The Augur Takes the Auspices

.

Silver Gelatin Print (120x240cm), Inkget Print (20x40cm), Soundscape (5:30), 2023

This work generates sound and image according to a strictly codified system of processing information as a means of examining modern applications of machine learning technology. Drawing upon the ancient Roman divination practice of Augury, this work positions AI generated images in a lineage of ‘seeing’. Seemingly disparate, Augury and the camera are aligned in their regard as a mode of ‘seeing’, with the camera often described as a ‘mechanical eye’ and the root of the word Augury, ‘aug’ meaning ‘to see’. This work generates sound and image according to a strictly codified system of processing information as a means of examining modern applications of machine learning technology.
