Kate Brown

 Skeletal anchor portal

.

Steel rod, black powder coat and spray paint, thread, copper wire, Fimo, bronze solar tint, fly screen

Skeletal anchor portal- the black steel sculpture was first shown as a part of a larger body of work titled ‘dimensions perceived by the organs of hearing’ at firstdraft gallery, 2011. To show this work over 10 years later speaks to the physical development the artist has endured after a previous significant health interruption.
In 2006, Kate had a serious brain haemorrhage and in her recovery and her practice she started looking at the rhizomatic and molecular structures of the body. To build new neural pathways to gain movement she practised performance techniques like body weather and incorporated tai chi and meditation as tools and materials to draw from. Kate sees this work as foundational to her body centred practice and added an additional portal sculpture for this iteration, showing the transformative structural nature of the neuro/physical.
