Since 2006, a non-profit space with an exhibition program of non-objective, reductive, material-based and process driven abstract art, Factory 49 provided a valuable platform for experimental projects, exhibition opportunities and international exchanges for artists.
Invitation to participate in 'FACTORY 49. A Tribute' was extended to all artists who exhibited in Factory 49. The exhibition showcases 67 artists from Australia, New Zealand, France and Germany with artworks either from their Factory 49 shows or new works.
This exhibition celebrates the history of a project that was funded by Pam Aitken, and her creative vision that has brought so many artists together. Like many ARIs (Artist Run Initiatives) in Sydney, including Articulate project space, Factory 49 operated over the years without an ongoing program funding. Along with Pam, many artists contributed their time and energy to platform the program that between 2006 - 2022 featured over 300 artists in solo and group exhibitions in Sydney, Paris, Miami and Stockholm. The legacy of Factory 49 lays in the unique opportunities it created for individual artists and artists groups across Australia, and around the world to connect, share and collaborate.
