Memory of a Tree and other works about Time

KENDAL HEYES

Upstairs  | Opens on Sep 28 until Oct 20 | Fri, Sat & Sun

These are pyrographic works about time and memory. They are made using a laser cutter to burn images onto paper. The images are mostly sourced from original ink drawings, but these are combined with photographic images and fragments of text.
These are pyrographic works about time and memory. They are made using a laser cutter to burn images onto paper. The images in these works are mostly details from my own ink drawings, although some are from photographs. Memory of a Tree is made up mostly of details of an original ink drawing, but also contains other elements, like the photographs of parts of the tree in winter, the branches without leaves, so it’s also a memory over seasons. I also used images from closer in and further away, and in some cases flipped the image horizontally, so the pyrographic image (mis)remembers the original image of the tree in a series of details.
Other works deal with the same theme, but are also about thinking and digression, and the source material is more diverse: a lot of the images are details from ink drawings of driving, walking on the beach etc, but also incorporate images taken off the TV as well as images of texts from books.
It’s about the way, for example, when I’m driving I can be simultaneously watching the road and details of the landscape, thinking of the destination, remembering a conversation or another place that’s similar etc. The work partly references and reflects the way Lawrence Sterne depicts a working mind with his endless digressions in Tristram Shandy.
