Round & Round 2024

Inspired by Kazimir Malevich’s ‘Black Circle’, which championed the autonomy of art as a pure, non-utilitarian form, ‘Round & Round’ reconsiders this idea through a contemporary perspective. While Malevich sought to sever art from functional or political purposes, this installation questions whether such detachment is achievable, or even desirable, when art is inherently tied to material culture and the lived world.
Using recycled materials such as components from IKEA stools and utilitarian elements like rope, 'Round & Round' engages in a dialogue between abstraction and everyday functionality. These choices anchor the work in the realities of production and consumption, contrasting Malevich’s ideal of transcendence.
As a site-specific installation, ‘Round & Round’ interacts with the architectural and spatial dynamics of its environment, emphasising the inextricable relationship between art and its context. By embracing these intersections, the work blurs the boundaries between autonomy and utility, asking viewers to consider the evolving role of art in a world defined by connection and interdependence.
