Jane Burton Taylor

Diary Sampler, My Mother Told Me, Artefact of Colonialism and Colonial Legacy

.

Antique linen and silk and cotton embroidery thread (timber frame)

These artworks reimagine 1800s embroidery samplers, conventionally stitched to show a  woman’s prowess.  The imagined maker is a young colonial woman with a social conscience; bearing witness to the era by stitching land grant maps, and other social history, symbols of her daily life and animals significant to local indigenous peoples.

Artist profile

Jane’s art practice is motivated by political, social and ecological issues. She often bases her work on an existing object; reinterpreting it in a contemporary context and drawing on collective memory and associations. Her practice incorporates textile, photography, film, installation and the ephemeral. Her materials vary according to the concept she is investigating. She is a Masters graduate from the National Art School and the College of Fine Arts, NSW University.
