deconstructed second-hand clothes, 85cm x 150cm, 2025
I am conducting experiments into the interaction of textile fibres with soil and it’s micro- and macro-organisms in my garden in Sydney.
I amass my raw materials by deconstructing second-hand clothes into two resources - the skeletal seams, and the flesh (dissected from between the seams). This (the flesh) is torn into strips and woven into new structures and fabrics.
I have woven 8 almost identical tall narrow pieces of cloth (each 85cm x 12cm) from a variety of fibres and buried them at a depth of approximately 20cm in the garden for between 21 and 53 days (in January and February 2025). The natural fibres have broken down to various extents, and the synthetic fibres have not changed. I have ‘repaired’ some of the samples.
When these strips are displayed side by side, they remind me of core samples taken from the earth. Will this be the result of textile landfill?

For 10 years, Jane has exhibited conceptual art using second-hand textiles. She has considered the role of women, the ubiquity of textiles and the inherent ability of both to nurture. Jane has deepened her private awareness of the overconsumption of clothing and waste. Ideas of science and the natural world, enrich these thoughts.
