The painting Chlorophyll is a visual metaphor for the extraordinary process of photosynthesis, in which light is converted into chemical energy that supports countless forms of life on Earth. At the heart of this transmutation is chlorophyll, the green pigment in plants, which is essential for transforming sunlight and other inorganic elements into organic, life-sustaining compounds.
Maria Constantinescu is an Australian artist based in Sydney, NSW. Her work investigates different modalities in which information about the universe and our world is translated into contemporary works of art, as a continuum of an artistic tradition nascent in 18th-century Romanticism. Through a range of media including painting, drawing, digital video, and clay, Constantinescu’s studio practice focuses on modes of making the unseen visible, presenting the unpresentable, and the connections between imagination and reality.
