I am interested in the visual chemistry created by coloured grids, combined with the mark of the hand. I aim to make each brushstroke visible, so that a painting is not merely a combination of formal elements (important as that is), but also a measure of time and in its own way, a performance. I aim to complete my smaller paintings within a set time (typically 50 minutes), so that, in one sense, each brushstroke is a unit of time and the painting as a whole, a chronometer.

Artist profile

Paul Mallam graduated from the National Art School with a major in painting. He also works in sculpture and photography. He has had solo exhibitions at the Beatty, Blender, AIRspace, Factory 49 and Damien Minton Galleries and at the Australian Catholic University. His practice spans both non-representational and figurative art and he has been a finalist in the Archibald and National Photographic Portrait Prizes.
