Fabric, graphite, colour pencil and acrylic on canvas, 2024, each work is 35cm x 35cm

I have been exploring the concept of plant memory and displacement. I was preparing for a recent exhibition and stumbled on swatches of fabric that I had been working on some years before. I applied them to small linen canvases and the overall images spoke to me of old botanical manuscripts.

Extending the lines from the fabric motifs unified each work and echoed the tendrils of memory which occupy an intangible space. Colouring some shapes recalls how memory is populated with intermittent flashes of colour, shapes and images. My use of colour pencil and graphite was deliberate because, like memory, they are transient and can be erased or smudged.

Artist profile

I’ve been exploring the concept of plant memory and displacement through the lens of the European expeditions when plants were ‘discovered’, exploited, and removed from their natural habitat.

I use a "paint by numbers" technique in response to the colour coding system of early botanical artists and include images, fabrics and script to convey a sense of memory.
