 Beyond My Control

Beyond My Control (2025)

Beyond My Control unfolds from the work ‘I made’ for Process(ed), 2024. That work, titled My Best Artwork, was a tongue in cheek response the theme, taking a plant (a succulent) that had evolved from a small cutting to a sprawling plant with tendrils reaching towards the light.

In the period that has elapsed since Process(ed) 2024, I noted that one of the tendrils has extended vertically, the rest remaining willow like, their weight drawing them downwards.

To highlight this ideosyncracy since Processed) 2024, I’ve created a box-like form to fit glove like into a rear alcove at Articulate.

In the lid of the box is a hole through which the tendril escapes. Isolated from the parent plant, it creates a calligraphic gesture framed by the alcove.

The remaining plant, can be viewed through a peep hole on the side, where one can glimpse the sprawling tendrils of the plant as they wrap around the base of the plant holder.

On the fourth side of the box is a louvered window allowing light and air necessary for the plant’s ongoing existence as it approximates the conditions where it normally resides in my studio on the floor above.

The plant continues to evolve, during the course of the exhibition, its process being ‘beyond my control’.
