 Revisiting Paper Memories

.

Medium: rice paper, naphtol dyes, damar varnish, beeswax
Dimensions: variable, Year: 2003 to the present

Revisiting Paper Memories is an iteration of an ongoing work which explores the nature of memory and the nexus between theme and process.
The component sheets of paper hold a record of ‘experiences’. Folded, wrapped, twisted or pleated before dying, each is unique. Produced by design, chance and accident they can be assembled in any order or stand alone. The overall dimensions are variable and adaptable. The dimension of time is an indispensable element in the full realisation of the work. In 2003* I predicted that the damar varnish, which then produced a beautiful translucence, would eventually cause the work to yellow, become brittle and disintegrate, thereby emulating the fragility of memory. The elements have now been aging for around 20 years.
PROCESS.ED offers a perfect opportunity to revisit these paper memories, to intervene in the process and rearrange the elements within the dictates of their deteriorating condition.
I envisage pin tacking the elements to a wall space measuring approx. 2metres X 2metres. Any debris, resulting from the process, would remain at the base as an integral part of the piece.

2003* 5:15 pm (paper memories), site specific installation, the Newcastle city west ARTwalk project.

Artist profile

Through the integration of theme, process and media my practice explores the intricate patterns, textures and metaphoric potential of everyday materials and objects. My work invites the viewer to embark on a journey of imagination and introspection.
I hold a B.A. (Visual Arts) and Diploma of Education from Newcastle College of Advanced Education. I have exhibited regionally, in Sydney and London. Since 2020 I have participated in four shows at Articulate Project Space.
