An exhibition that seeks to embrace the ubiquitous chair as an artwork.
Chair brings together chairs in all their various forms: real, remembered and reimagined. This exhibition expands and re/deconstructs them in a wide range of media from 3D forms to painting, from performance elements to soft sculpture; as installation, as drawing, as video, and as photography. Here, chairs are reclaimed and remade away from their functional use – transformed to embrace conceptual ideas, personal histories, and aesthetics (and with more than a nod to art history, mcm design, punk aesthetics and even whimsy). In this show, form no longer follows function but leads artists to ‘mix it up’, liberating the chair from useful object to artform.
