AFTER - IMAGE

The intention of this work is for the observer to experience the phenomenon of the 'after-image' which is a subjective experience of spirit working in matter.
The precision, practicality & abject beauty of geometric form & geometric pattern was suddenly & deeply understood, as a physical & spiritual experience when visiting the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. In Bahrain, a similar & complimentary overwhelming experience when visiting the Al Fateh Grand Mosque, which was equally beautiful. Since then, geometric abstraction & the after-image phenomenon has been the focus of my work. By definition the after-image process is one of directing oneself into what is seen.
At the time I was quite aware of Rudolf Steiner's Anthroposophical writings & reflections on the "spirit eye" & the phenomenon of the afterimage, which he & his colleagues & followers, Kandinsky among them, postulated was both a cognitive & spiritual process.
One could not avoid the experience of the after-image phenomenon in the presence of the eccentricity & extraordinary abundance of geometric pattern in both the above-mentioned locations.
Encouraged by this experience, I began making work which consciously sought to affect an after-image using repetitive geometric pattern. To guarantee a full & conscious experience, the composition generally provides or includes a black or white space, to receive the averted gaze for conscious cognition of the afterimage.
Providing an understanding of the process of the 'after-image phenomenon' in relation to art appreciation, German philosopher Theodor Lipps (1851-1914) in his work "Asthetik" (1903 - 1914) called the after-image phenomenon "einfuhlung" describing the process "of directing oneself into what is seen" & thus making all artistic appreciation depend on a similar self- projection into the object.
